Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
