Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
